Last Week: The Soaring Eagles picked up their first win of the 2018 campaign last week, earning a convincing 12-2 triumph over Utica College on Friday, March 30, in Clinton, New York. Conor Bawiec '18 was given the starting nod in the victory, going 8.0 innings and allowing two runs, neither of which were earned, while striking out five batters. Four Soaring Eagles tallied doubles in the contest, led by Tommy Fogarty '20, who posted a game-high four RBIs. For the week, Fogarty owned a .444 batting average (8-for-18) with three doubles and nine RBIs. Unfortunately for Elmira, it went 0-4 in its remaining games last week. EC lost twice to Utica to close out the season series, while also dropping league bouts to St. John Fisher and Stevens.Â

Last Week: The Purple and Gold took top honors at the Advanced Spirit Nationals in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday evening. The Soaring Eagles posted a final score of 88.9 at their final regional event before the 2018 National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) College Nationals.

Next Game: The Soaring Eagles are scheduled to leave on Tuesday for the NCA College Nationals. The preliminary round is scheduled for Friday, April 5, in Daytona Beach, Florida. A national champion will be crowned at the Daytona Beach Bandshell the following day. Â

Last Week: EC went 0-2 in a pair of bouts last week. Elmira started with a 14-2 setback to non-conference foe Kean University on Wednesday. EC then came out and had its best performance of the season against Utica on Saturday afternoon. Despite taking a 16-7 loss, Elmira controlled the game at the start, leading 5-2 one minute into the second quarter and owning a 7-6 advantage at halftime. Nevin Olney '18 led the way for the Soaring Eagles with season highs in points (4) and goals (3). Sophomore Kevin DiMagno '20 posted his first career multi-point game with one goal and one assist. Freshman goalie Jacob Mattice'21 started for EC and made nine saves in 45 minutes of action.

Last Week: The Soaring Eagles dropped a pair of Empire 8 bouts last week, beginning with a hard-fought 14-10 setback against Houghton College. The Highlanders were able to take the contest with a strong first-half performance that saw them take a 10-4 into halftime. Elmira settled in and outscored the Highlanders in the second half, 6-4, but it proved to not be enough. Rachael Goetz '20 and Sarah Hughson '18 were tied for the team lead with three goals apiece. Freshman Kacie Pierce '21 started in goal for Elmira and made a season-high 14 saves to keep the contest competitive. Unfortunately for EC, its second bout this week against Utica was not as close, as Elmira suffered a 19-4 loss to the Pioneers on Saturday. Rachel Grampp '18 paced Elmira with two points (1g-1a) against Utica.

Last Week: The EC softball team was blanked in both ends of a conference doubleheader against the Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in Weehawken, New Jersey. In the opener, Elmira trailed just 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth frame until the Ducks plated two in the fifth and two in the sixth to seal a 5-0 win. EC recorded five hits in the contest, led by Allie Krohn '20, who recorded the first multi-hit game of her career with a 2-for-2 showing. McKenzie Slaven '20 was solid for most of the afternoon, as she did not allow an earned run until the aforementioned fifth inning. She finished the bout with five runs allowed, four earned, to go along with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. In the second bout, Stevens stormed ahead early, taking a 4-0 lead after two innings, an advantage it would not relinquish in an 8-0 win. EC was held to just two hits in the bout. Carolyn Corcoran '19 posted the lone extra-base hit for the Soaring Eagles, a double in the top of the fifth frame.

Last Week: EC men's tennis went 1-1 last week, which included the team's first victory of the 2018 season. The Soaring Eagles first battled the Wildcats of Penn College on Friday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Elmira suffered a 6-3 defeat to the Wildcats, as the Soaring Eagles were unable to overcome a 3-0 deficit after doubles play. EC did rally in singles action, as Patrick Tracey '18, Stephen Gervase '20 and Jordan Curtis '19 all picked up wins. It was against Utica in the second match of the weekend where the Soaring Eagles earned their first victory of the season, 9-0. Tracey and Gervase cruised to two more wins in the match, as neither dropped a set in either singles or doubles play. Freshman Frank Endieveri III '21, Zackarie Stedge '21 and Ravi Chauma '21 all earned the first singles win of their collegiate careers in the bout.

Men's Volleyball (19-9, 5-4 UVC)
Last Week: The Elmira men were unable to pick up a victory in its final United Volleyball Conference (UVC) tri-match of 2018, which took place at Speidel Gymnasium. EC kicked off the event with a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to No. 10 Vassar College on Friday evening. Leading two-sets-to-one and up 23-22 in the fourth set, the Soaring Eagles looked primed to take the crucial conference bout. The experience of the Brewers set in at that point, as the road team went on to win the set, 28-26, before sealing the match with a win in the fifth. Ryan McDonough '19 was fantastic in the setback, as he led EC with 18 kills and a .286 hitting percentage. Elmira then fell to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day, 3-1. The contest came down to a tightly-contest third set, as a 27-25 Engineers victory gave the road team the important 2-1 advantage. Jose Malave '21 posted team highs in kills (17) and digs (10) in the match to record his second consecutive double-double and his seventh overall as a rookie.

Next Game: Elmira will play its final home match of 2018 on Friday, April 6, as it welcomes St. John Fisher to Speidel Gymnasium for a UVC showdown at 6:00 p.m. The contest will serve as EC's autism awareness match.
