Last Week: The Soaring Eagles had their best week of the 2018 campaign this past week, as they went 3-3 with two of the setbacks coming by just one run. Elmira kicked off play with an exciting 18-10 triumph over Wells College on Tuesday, April 24, before sweeping a doubleheader against SUNY Canton on Sunday to win the season series over the Roos, 2-1. The week was highlighted by strong hitting performances from several Soaring Eagles including Nick Sampogna '18 and Harrison Zambarano '19. Sampogna, who was named an EC Athlete of the Week, went 7-for-21 (.333) from the plate, in addition to finishing tied for to the team lead with eight runs scored and seven RBIs. Zambarano posted a whopping .563 batting average (9-for-16) with four RBIs, three runs and one double. On the mound, Andy Reed '19 went 2-1 with a 1.74 ERA after making three appearances in relief. Against Wells, he pitched 3.1 innings and allowed just one earned run with one strikeout. In Elmira's 8-4 comeback triumph over Canton in the nightcap on Saturday, Reed came in and held the Kangaroos scoreless in 3.0 innings of work to take the win.Â

Next Game: The Soaring Eagles bring a close to the 2018 campaign with three games this week. The first of the trio is a non-conference tilt against Alfred State College on Tuesday, May 1, that is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. in Alfred, New York.

Men's Golf
Last Week: The EC men finished fifth in the seven-team field at the 12th Annual Oswego Spring Invitational with a team score of 352 (+68), the team's second-best 18-hole score of the season. The tournament was originally scheduled to be a two-day event, but was cut short due to rain on Sunday. Matt McGaugh '21 led the way for the Soaring Eagles with a score of 82 (+11) to place in a three-way tie for 14th. Charl Pretorius '19 carded an 89 (+18) to land in a tie for 22nd place. Ryan Blais '21 (90, +19), Darien Perez '21 (91, +20) and Nicholas Neary '19 (100, +29) rounded out Elmira's participants in the event. Blais and Perez finished back-to-back 24th and 25th place, while Neary took 30th overall.

Men's Lacrosse (2-10, 1-6 E8)
Last Week: Elmira dropped its 2018 season finale to St. John Fisher College on Saturday, April 28, at Campus Field. On Class of 2018 Recognition Day, three of EC's four seniors scored a goal in the contest, with the lone holdout defender Jeff Ahlgrim '18 playing a prominent role on the other end of the field. In his final collegiate game, Nevin Olney '18 found the back of the net twice to lead the Soaring Eagles. Kevin DiMagno '20, Colby Runk '18 and Jacob Magnoli '18 rounded out EC's goal-scorers. Freshman goalkeeper Jacob Mattice '21 started the game and made 18 saves in 41:43 minutes of work. Junior Cam Brickey '19 also did his part on defense, as he led Elmira in both ground balls (6) and caused turnovers (3).

Women's Lacrosse (3-13, 1-7 E8)
Last Week: The Purple and Gold dropped three contests last week to close out 2018. In the first game of the week on Tuesday, the Soaring Eagles were unable to find an answer for Hartwick's offense, as the Hawks took a 20-9 victory at Campus Field. Then, Elmira fell to No. 20-ranked St. John Fisher by a 20-1 final score. In the bout, Sarah Hughson '18 became EC's all-time leader in caused turnovers with 117 in her illustrious career. Danielle Goddard '20 scored the lone goal for the Soaring Eagles. The following afternoon, Elmira fell to SUNY Canton, 13-7, in a hard-fought bout. A tight first half saw the Roos take a slim 5-4 lead into the halftime break. Five consecutive goals by Canton sealed a 13-7 loss for the Purple and Gold. After being recognized on Senior Day at Campus Field, Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 led Elmira with three points (1g-2a) on the afternoon. Both Rachael Goetz '20 and Kyra McDonald '18 ended the game tied for the team lead with two goals apiece. Both Rachel Grampp '18 and Kelcey Crawford '18 wrapped up their collegiate careers with goals in the contest.

Softball (7-14, 3-11 E8)
Last Week: The Soaring Eagles were quite busy this past week, as they squeezed eight games into the seven-day span. Elmira went 3-5 in the octet of contests, picking up a sweep of Alfred State and earning a split with The Sage Colleges. After a pair of defeats to tough non-conference foe Lycoming College on Tuesday, EC bounced back to defeat Alfred State by final scores of 8-0 and 10-0 on Thursday. Elmira closed out the week with a split against the Gators and a pair of close setbacks to Alfred University to bring an end to Empire 8 Conference play. Juniors Emily Clark '19 and Maddy Johnson '19 led the way for the Soaring Eagles at the plate. Clark logged three home runs, nine RBIs, six runs and one double to go along with a .286 batting average to earn EC Athlete of the Week accolades. Johnson was a model of efficiency, as she led the team in on-base percentage (.690), batting average (.591), hits (13), runs (10) and stolen bases (3). In the circle, both Katie McDougal '18 and McKenzie Slaven '20 were strong. McDougal went 2-2 with a 4.14 ERA and 14 strikeouts, while Slaven posted a 2.86 ERA with one win and 16 strikeouts.

The first of two non-conference tilts will begin at 3:00 p.m. The twin bill was originally scheduled to be played in Canton, New York, but due to unplayable field conditions it will now be held in the Southern Tier.Â

Men's Tennis (2-9, 2-6 E8)
Last Week: EC wrapped up the year with 9-0 losses to E8 foes Houghton and St. John Fisher. Despite taking the setback against the Highlanders and Cardinals, who are ranked second and third in the final league standings, Elmira had some close calls. Against Fisher on Senior Day on Saturday, Yaniv Kogan '18 came close to picking up victories at both No. 2 singles and doubles. Alongside Jordan Curtis '19 in doubles play, the fourth-year netter came close to forcing a tie break in an 8-6 defeat. In singles action Kogan took five games from John Miller in both the first and second set, but fell just short of winning a few critical points.
