ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College softball team will host the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, May 1, at Eldridge Park Stadium. The twin-bill, which was originally scheduled to be played in North Country, will begin with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
LAST TIME OUT
The Saxons of Alfred University edged the Soaring Eagles in both games on Saturday, April 28, at Harrington Field in Alfred, New York. In the opening contest, Elmira scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead over Alfred. The big inning was fueled by another home run from
Emily Clark '19, a three-run shot over the wall in the opposite field gap. The Saxons responded, however, with two runs in the bottom of the frame to secure their first win of the afternoon, 6-5. In the second bout, senior
Katie McDougal '18 limited Alfred to just four runs in a complete-game effort, but the Purple and Gold were held to just one run in a 4-1 loss. Classmates
Maddy Johnson '19 and
Sam Chadbourne '19, as well as second-year infielder
Sarah Garner '20, each finished with a hit in both games.

SLAVEN SLINGS STRIKEOUTS:
The Soaring Eagles have found success in the pitcher's circle from first-year standout
McKenzie Slaven '20. The Horseheads, New York, native ranks among the Empire 8 Conference's top-10 in both earned-run average (3.13) and strikeouts (44). She pitched a two-hit complete game in her most recent victory over Alfred State on April 26, which she followed up with seven strikeouts in a loss to The Sage Colleges the following day. Slaven's 44 strikeouts are the most by a Soaring Eagle in a single season since 2014, when both Alex Puglisi '14 and Emilie Rogers '14 fanned over 100 batters apiece.

HIT STREAK CONTINUES
Junior outfielder
Maddy Johnson '19 continues to do what she does best: get on base. She enters today's doubleheader riding a nine-game hit streak, a span that includes three multi-hit contests. In 21 games thus far in 2018, the 2017 Empire 8 All-Conference Second Teamer has finished with at least one hit in all but three. With 94 hits in her career, the Rome, Pennsylvania, native has a shot at reaching the 100-hit club before this season ends.

SERIES HISTORY
Last season, the Kangaroos and Soaring Eagles met for the first-time ever, and the two teams split their doubleheader at Eldridge Park. In the first game, the Purple and Gold claimed an 8-5 victory, a game in which
Emily Clark '19 went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Katie McDougal '18 struck out eight in the nightcap, but the 'Roos were able to come out on top of a 5-2 decision.

SCOUTING CANTON
Bad weather has plagued the Kangaroos, who have played only 16 games this spring. They haven't hit the field since last Tuesday, April 24, when Houghton College swept Canton by scores of 13-3 and 16-1. Three players are hitting above a .450 clip, led by junior outfielder Valerie Clark, who's .512 batting average (21-for-41) rivals that of EC's
Maddy Johnson (.508). Sophomore utility player Courtney Hyland has a team-leading 20 RBIs and is slugging .769, thanks to her team-best 11 extra-base hits. It has been a one-woman show in the pitcher's circle for Nicole Woodward. The sophomore has thrown 73.0 of the team's 93.0 innings, and is 6-7 with 10 complete games and a 6.81 ERA. Her loss to Houghton snapped a six-game win streak.
