Katy Jewett '21 highlighted today's women's tennis action by collecting Elmira College's lone victory in an 8-1 setback on the road to Empire 8 Conference foe St. John Fisher College. The win was Jewett's first of the 2018 campaign, after sitting out singles action through the team's first three matches of the year.
Elmira battled St. John Fisher in doubles action, but each match saw the Cardinals earn a pair of breaks, which ultimately led to a trio of wins.
Cassie Brown '21 and Jewett fell by an 8-4 score line at the No. 1 spot, while
Cheyanne Holwell '19 and
Marta Kliszcz '20 fell at No. 3 by an identical 8-4 score. EC's tandem at the No. 2 spot,
Sarah Hill '19 and
Brandi Meeder '22, were bested by Fisher, 8-3.
In singles action, the Cardinals earned straight-set victories starting at the first, second, third, fourth and fifth positions, and dropped just eight games in the process.
Elmira's lone win on the day came form the racquet of Jewett, who downed her counterpart from Fisher, Valerie Morgans, in two convincing sets, 6-2, 6-2. It was Jewett's sixth singles match of her collegiate career, as the Upper Nyack, New York, native improved to 3-3 all-time in singles action.
