HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The Purple and Gold couldn't keep pace with Stevens Institute of Technology in their Empire 8 Conference opener on Friday evening. A pair of Soaring Eagles scored in double-figures, but it wasn't enough as Stevens downed Elmira by a final score of 79-57.
A cold-touch from behind the three-point arc loomed large for the Purple and Gold, as Stevens held Elmira to a solitary trey during the contest. The Ducks capitalized on Elmira's miscues all evening, finishing the game with 27 points off of turnovers.
Sally Hogan '19 and
Lindsey Heaton '19 led the charge offensively for EC, tallying 17 and 15 points, respectively. Heaton rounded out her stat-line with eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals, while Hogan added three boards and two blocks.
The Purple and Gold hung tough with the Ducks in the opening quarter as they traded blows with their E8 foe. A pair of layups from Hogan pushed EC ahead 14-10, but a late barrage from the Ducks sent EC into the second quarter behind 15-14. Stevens started to pull away in the second quarter, as the Ducks used a 16-0 run that spanned nearly six minutes to build an insurmountable lead. Heaton halted the run with a pair of makes at the charity stripe, but Stevens headed into the halftime break with a 35-25 advantage.
Lauren Franklin '20 struck first for the Soaring Eagles to open the second half of play, but Stevens kept up the offensive pressure to maintain its lead. EC's offense came alive in the fourth quarter, as the Purple and Gold dropped 20 points in the period, but it was too little, too late, for Elmira, as Stevens held on to earn the 79-57 victory.
