ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse was unable to keep pace with the offense of Cazenovia on Sunday afternoon, as the Wildcats earned a 16-7 victory over the Soaring Eagles at Ernie Davis Academy.
The Purple and Gold hung with the Wildcats through the first half, but a run of six unanswered goals in the second stanza proved to be the difference. Turnovers loomed large for EC, as Cazenovia forced the Soaring Eagles into 31 miscues, which allowed the visitors to control the flow of the contest.
Krystyna Lilland '21 made 14 saves in her second-career start in goal for EC, as the sophomore faced a barrage of 30 shots from the Wildcats.
Mikayla Carfello '22 opened the scoring a 1:03 into the contest off of a free position chance. Elmira's lead was short-lived however, as Cazenovia's attack rattled off seven consecutive goals, three of which came from Breanna Howe. Trailing 7-1, the Soaring Eagles answered with a three-goal run to close the opening half.
Rachael Goetz '20 and
Stephanie Martin '22 supplied the firepower during the barrage, with Goetz scoring two of the three tallies.
EC looked poised to keep the comeback rolling following the half-time break, but the Wildcats offense wrangled control of the game back from the Purple and gold. Cazenovia poured in six goals in a little over minutes to put the contest out of reach for the Soaring Eagles. EC got three goals back following markers from
Kate Gibson '20, Goetz and Martin, but the damage was already done.
