HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- It was a defensive battle for the Elmira College men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon, as the Soaring Eagles fell in a low-scoring affair to Centenary University (N.J.) by a final score of 7-2.
Centenary was able to dictate the flow of the game for a majority of the contest, as the Cyclones sent 29 shots towards EC's cage. Despite the high shot total, Elmira's defense dug in behind the stellar play of sophomore goaltender
Jacob Mattice '21, who finished with 22 saves.
The Cyclones opened the scoring eight minutes into the contest through Timothy Kaiser III. The Purple and Gold responded a short three minutes, as junior
David Keisler '20 cashed in on a man-up opportunity with his first tally of the year.
Despite EC knotting the score early, Centenary pounced with three straight goals to seize a 4-1 lead midway into the second quarter. Rookie
Isaac Gottheil '22 halted the barrage with his first career tally with 6:42 left in the second quarter. The Soaring Eagles were unable to seize the momentum, as the Cyclones defense ratcheted down to keep EC off of the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
