Six-Run Seventh Inning Leads Brockport Past Elmira

Score: College at Brockport 12, Elmira College 3
Records: Elmira (4-24), Brockport (15-16)
Location: Dunn Field -- Elmira, N.Y.

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A strong start by sophomore Taber Carter '21 was nullified in the late innings on Tuesday night at historic Dunn Field, as the visiting College at Brockport broke open a tie game by posting a six-spot in the top of the seventh en route to a 12-3 victory over Elmira College.

The Soaring Eagles and Golden Eagles looked evenly matched through the first six innings of the non-conference tilt, as evidenced by a 2-2 score. However, miscues on the mound and defense allowed the Brockport bats to put the game out of reach with six runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and three more in the ninth.

Carter all but cruised through his 5.0 innings, as the second-year right-handed hurler gave up one unearned run on two hits and a walk. One of the two hits he allowed was a lead-off single in the first at-bat of the evening, but Carter responded by picking Nicholas Pastore off at first as part of a one-two-three frame. Two errors in the third allowed the Golden Eagles to notched their first run, but the Hannibal, New York, product responded by facing the minimum in his last two innings.

When Carter exited the game, he was in line for a win, as the Purple and Gold took a 2-1 lead in the home half of the third. Brockport's starting pitcher, Tommy Kretzler, was locked in from the get-go, as he recorded all six outs in the first two innings with strikeouts. Kretzler, however, lost his target in the third and loaded the bases with back-to-back walks to Tommy Fogarty '20 and Mark Ryan '21. Harrison Zambarano '19 followed with a liner into shallow right for two RBIs and a one-run lead.

The Golden Eagles managed to tie the game at 2-all in the sixth against EC reliever Mason Weir '21, before scoring six runs on four hits and three errors against two different relief pitchers in the seventh.

With their sails deflated, the Soaring Eagles went down quietly in the seventh and eighth innings. Down 12-2 in the ninth, James Delaney '22 entered off of the bench and was given a free pass by Brockport's Ryan Greco. Delaney advanced to second on a ground out and scored when Jack Thomas '22 knocked an RBI single back through the box.

News and Notes
  • Brockport won the first-ever meeting between the feathered foes and leads the series, 1-0.
  • Five different Soaring Eagles recorded a hit: Mason Ryan '22, Jansen Crossley '20, Mark Ryan, Zambarano, and Thomas.
  • Zambarano drove in two of EC's three runs, while Thomas was responsible for the third RBI.
  • Carter struck out one batter in 5.0 innings and reduced his season ERA to 3.74.
  • Alex Crysler '21 struck out a season-high two in one inning out of the bullpen.
