Fisher Earns Decisive Win vs. Elmira in E8 Series Finale

Location: Dunn Field -- Elmira, N.Y.

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The St. John Fisher College Cardinals capped off their Empire 8 Conference series against the Elmira College baseball team with a 16-1 victory at historic Dunn Field on Wednesday evening.

Although the Soaring Eagles held the Cardinals to a single through the first four innings, the visitors broke out the bats in the second half of the contest, as Fisher outhit EC 18-to-5 overall. Holding onto a slim 2-0 advantage, St. John Fisher took control with a seven-run fifth inning, before adding one run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and four more in the ninth.

Garinder Singh Sarana '20 took the loss for Elmira, despite giving up just two runs on one hit and three walks. In 4.0 innings, the junior flamethrower collected a season-high seven strikeouts on 82 pitches, increasing his career-high season strikeout total to 32.

The only trouble Sarana found himself in came in his final inning in the top of the fourth. A full-count walk and hit-by-pitch put the first two Fisher batsmen on base, and both runners would come around to score on an RBI single – the lone hit he allowed – and a sac fly. He avoided further damage by fanning Jack Kelleher for the third out in the frame.

Elmira's only run of the game was tallied in the fifth. Jack Thomas '22 led off the inning with a slow roller up the third-base line, and the Cardinals' third baseman sailed the throw to first. After reaching third on the error, Thomas scored on a Jared Money '22 RBI single in the next at-bat. Anthony Brophy issued a pair of free passes to Mason Ryan '22 and Jansen Crossley '20 later in the inning, but Mark Ryan '21 flew out on the first pitch he saw, stranding the bases loaded.

News and Notes
  • Crossley and Money each recorded two hits to pace the Purple and Gold.
  • Sarana started on the bump and struck out a season-high seven in the loss.
  • Kyle Tubbs '22 was the only EC reliever that did not allow a run out of the bullpen.
  • Corey DeMauro '20 struck out four and gave up one earned run in 2.1 innings.
  • Mark Ryan extended his on-base streak to a team-best 14 consecutive games.
