ANNADALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team opened the 2019 campaign on the short end of a 6-0 decision against Liberty League foe Bard College on Friday night at the Ferrari Soccer and Lacrosse Complex.
In a battle of the beaks, host Raptors (1-0-0) held possession of the ball for much of the contest, as they outshot the visiting Soaring Eagles (0-1-0) by a final total of 20-to-4. Corner kicks were also in favor of Bard at a smaller margin, 5-to-1.
Bard's Julia Gibson deposited her first goal in the sixth minute. Giuliana Scanni doubled the advantage for the Raptors in the 12th minute, her first of two scores, as Bard went on to net five of its goals in the opening half.
Down by three, the Elmira women looked to penetrate the Bard defense, but had two possessions halted due to offsides in the 29th and 31st minutes. Sandwiched in between the flags the 30th minute,
Taylor Hanson '21 was able to release her first shot of the night, but it sailed wide of its target.
Looking to break the scoreless drought, the Soaring Eagles finished with a slight 3-to-2 edge in shots in the second stanza.
Nicole Hanselman '20 had her first attempt get blocked in front of the net by a defender, and her second rip was saved by Bard goalkeeper Skylar Farmer in the 69th minute. Hanson had another look in the 72nd minute, but Farmer was there once again to deny Elmira's leading scorer from a year ago.
