HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Elmira College field hockey team dropped its 2019 Empire 8 Conference opener in heartbreaking fashion, as the Soaring Eagles were defeated in overtime by Houghton College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.
The Soaring Eagles (4-3, 0-1 E8) trailed the host Highlanders in shots, 12-to-8, and penalty corners, 9-to-8. It was Houghton's (4-6, 1-1 E8) ninth penalty corner that proved to be the difference in the 65th minute. On the play, Zoey Kasper inserted the ball to Hannah Daniels, who took a hard swing just inside the arc and found the back of the cage for the game-winner.
The loss came despite another stout performance by the EC defense and goalkeeper
Tina O'Donnell '20. The fourth-year goalie made five stops in regulation, including one in the closing moments of the fourth quarter to force overtime. She made three more saves in the extra period, all off of penalty-corner plays drawn up by the Highlanders. Seconds before giving up the game's lone goal, O'Donnell made a pair of fantastic saves to deny both Kasper and Daniels.
To start the seven-on-seven overtime,
Janie Kempf '21 had a chance to play hero for Elmira, but Houghton goalie Sarah Olandt preserved her clean sheet with one of her four saves.
