PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team was unable to find a way past No. 14-ranked Stevenson University on Saturday evening, as the Mustangs tripped up the Soaring Eagles, 5-1, at the Murray Athletic Center.
With the win, Stevenson improved to 12-3-0 overall and 9-1-0 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action. The loss moved the Elmira men to 10-4-1 with a 6-3-0 mark in conference play.
After a quiet start to the first period, the Mustangs managed to strike first on Saturday evening with 8:52 on the clock. The Soaring Eagles were in the midst of a power-play chance, but Stevenson's Dominic Brenza managed to force a turnover at Elmira's blue line. The Mustang's leading point-getter beat EC's
Chris Janzen '21 to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
The Soaring Eagles wasted almost no time to respond, as EC truck a little over a minute later.
Nick Ford '20 started the play with a pass to
Connor Powell '20 who cut into the right of the slot. Powell shifted the puck to
Anthony Parrucci '20 on the other side, and the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native did the rest as he powered home the equalizing goal.
The score did not stay steady for long, however, as the Mustangs added another goal just before the six-minute mark. Carl Lyden struck for the visitors after Christian Ripley forced an Elmira turnover.
Elmira's defense settled in to start the second period, which led to more offensive chances for the Purple and Gold. The Soaring Eagles outshot Stevenson 16-to-6 in the frame, but the Mustangs' Ryan Kenny managed to keep EC off of the scoreboard.
The two sides skated evenly to open the third period as Elmira pushed for the equalizer. Despite the Soaring Eagles' intentions, Stevenson capitalized on a miscue once gain to seize a 3-1 advantage, as Nick Gray scored an even-strength goal. As the game wore on penalties became a major factor, as Elmira was forced to spend the final 3:45 down at least one skater. Stevenson took advantage of having an extra body on the ice and tacked on a pair of power-play goals to close out the contest.
