WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Elmira College baseball team played Augustana College (Ill.) to a one-run game through the first six innings of Friday's matinee at the 2020 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, but the Vikings' offense exploded to a 16-2 win in the late innings.
Down 3-0, the Soaring Eagles (1-4) got on the scoreboard in the home half of the sixth.
Jack Volpe '20 beat out an infield single to lead-off the frame. With two away, Volpe scampered home from second on a
Tommy Fogarty '20 base hit. After swiping second, Fogarty was driven in by
Joey Florio '20, who rolled a grounder through the right side, bringing EC with one run at 3-2.
The Soaring Eagles limited Augustana (1-0) to just three runs on four hits in the first six innings in the Vikings' season-opener.
Garinder Singh Sarana '20 made his first start of the spring and gave up just two runs while logging a game-high five strikeouts in 4.0 innings. In relief,
Angus Adams '22 was tagged for an earned run in the fifth and recorded a scoreless frame in the sixth.
However, the Vikings came to life with five runs in the seventh, six in the eighth and one more in the ninth, and the Augustana bullpen combined for a trio of scoreless innings to close the contest.
