Defensive Battle Ends in Nazareth's Favor on Saturday Afternoon

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team dropped a home match with Empire 8 conference opponent Nazareth College 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Campus Field. The EC defense was able to hold off the Golden Flyers for 74 minutes before they broke through with a late goal. Nevaeh Winston '25 was excellent as usual for the Soaring Eagles, finishing the afternoon with 18 saves including a beautiful kick save on Nazareth breakaway midway through the second half.

JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: Elmira 0, Nazareth 1
LOCATION: Elmira, NY
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (3-5-2, 0-1-2 E8), Nazareth (3-4-3, 2-0-0 E8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Golden Flyers came out aggressive in the first 24 minutes of play, ripping off 13 shots, but a swarming Soaring Eagle defense made it hard to get anything on target.  In the 28th minute, Elmira found their first chance of the game when Brianna Rivera '25 drove down the right side of the penalty box and found space to get a shot off on the Golden Flyer goalkeeper.

The second half consisted of even more pressure from Nazareth, and Winston shined for EC as she amassed 12 of her 18 saves. In the 54th minute, Winston made one of her most impressive saves of the season as Nazareth broke through the Elmira defense and had a one on one with the freshman keeper from 7 yards away from goal. Winston made an amazing kick save with her left foot from point blank range to keep the Golden Flyers off the board.

With just over 15 minutes remaining in the game, Nazareth was able to break the tie when the ball was miscleared by the Soaring Eagle defense and it  fell to the foot of freshman Haley Glassman just outside the 18-yard box. She pushed forward towards goal and was able to poke it past Winston just as the defense tried to recover.
