ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the visiting Penn State-Behrend Lions on a wet Sunday afternoon at Campus Field. The Lions got on the board early with goals in the 12th and 18th minutes. EC's defense tightened up after that, limiting the amount of Penn State Behrend chances throughout the remainder of the match. The Soaring Eagles created seven total shots with five of them coming on target as they looked to get themselves back in the game.
Nevaeh Winston finished the day with 13 saves.
JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: Elmira 0, Penn State-Behrend 1
LOCATION: Elmira, NY
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (3-6-2, 0-1-2 E8), Penn State-Behrend (9-1, 2-0 AMCC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Penn State-Behrend scored their first goal in the 12th minute when Ava Michael drove down the right side of the penalty area and sent a low cross right to the feet of Trinity Prestash, who tapped it in to make it 1-0. Six minutes later, Elmira created a chance of their own on a nice cross by
Kelly Keegan '23. The Lions would take advantage though on the counter when Brenna McGuire sent a long pass to the top of the 18-yard box, finding Prestash all alone. Prestash would send the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the game, making the score 2-0.
Moving up from her spot as center back,
Taylor Wilms '22 started and played all of her minutes in a forward position for EC. The Soaring Eagles were able to send long balls forward for her to run on to which created a multitude of dangerous situations for the Penn State-Behrend defense. Ten minutes into the second half, Wilms raced the Lions' goalkeeper to the ball and looked to have poked it away right before being taken down. Instead of winning a penalty kick, the referee's decision went the other way, giving the foul against Wilms. Elmira continued to push for a goal throughout the remainder of the match and with 12 minutes to play
Rachel Bortnick found space and ripped a shot but it was just wide right.
