Elmira Uses Power-Play to Advantage, Skates to 5-3 Victory at Castleton

RUTLAND, VT. – The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team won their Friday evening matchup with the Spartans from Castleton University, 5-3. After trailing 2-0 in the first period, the Soaring Eagles clawed back for a trio of goals in the second period to take a 3-2 lead before the Spartans tied the game once again. With just over ten minutes remaining in regulation, it was Bailey Krawczyk '24 who notched the game-winner for EC who skated to a 5-3 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Soaring Eagles used the power-play to their advantage, taking care of four opportunities while notching three goals. In the first period, the Spartans snuck a goal past Elmira keeper Ben Fleischman '21 just 3:38 into the contest to take a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, the Spartans saw their lead increase to two on a goal from Brandon Picard, who helped Castleton carry a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
 
Out of the break, the Soaring Eagles scored their first goal at the 8:13 as Bailey Krawczyk '24 found the back of the next on a rebounded shot from Nicholas Domitrovic '24 just off the left side of the net which was originally fed from Amedo Mastrangeli '24.
 
Three minutes later, the Soaring Eagles were at it again on the power-play as following an EC shot, Jordan Gonzalez '24 collected thee rebound, fed a pass to Chance Gorman '24, who sniped a wrist shot into the upper-left hand side of the net to knot the score at 2-2.
 
With under ten seconds remaining in the period, Mastrangeli fed a pass up top to Gonzalez, who after ripping a shot at Castleton goalkeeper Kyle Alaverdy, was able to find Shawn Kennedy '24 for the score.
 
In the third, the Spartans evened the score at 3-3 six minutes into the period before Krawczyk notched the game winner just before the midway point in the period. The Soaring Eagles would tab another goal, as Jake Russo '23 scored on an empty net opportunity with just under 90 seconds remaining to seal the victory at 5-3.
 
Fleischman and Jeffrey Zero '23 would share time between the pipes for Elmira, as it was Zero who would be credited with the win, the first of his career after stopping 16 shots while allowing just one goal.

Elmira will be back in action tomorrow against the Thoroughbreds from Skidmore College to wrap up the weekend of NEHC play. Puck drop is set for 4:00 PM from Saratoga Springs, New York.
