Sage Tops Elmira in Men’s Basketball, 59-43

ALBANY, N.Y. -- A slow first half was too much for the Elmira College men's basketball team to overcome, as the Soaring Eagles (1-7, 1-7 E8) suffered a 59-43 loss on the road to Russel Sage College (3-3, 3-3 E8).
 
A hard-nosed first-half defensive effort from Sage stifled Elmira's offense, as EC knocked down just 4-of-32 attempts (12.5%). Elmira's woes from the field allowed the Gators to take a 32-13 lead into the halftime break.
 
In the second half, Sage expanded its lead to 34-13, but a jumper from Isiah Charles '21 at 18:39 ignited a 12-0 run for the Soaring Eagles and trimmed to deficit to single digits, 34-25, for the first time since 12:17 of the first half. During that stretch, Rashaad Nurse '22 produced eight of his team-high 13 points.
 
Unfortunately for Elmira, this was as close as it would get, as Sage clamped down defensively. The Gators went on to lead by as many as 24 points before closing out the Soaring Eagles by a 59-43 final score.
 
Nurse led the Soaring Eagles with a 13-point 10-rebound double-double effort. It was his second double-double of the season. Nurse also made three steals and one assist.
 
Senior Shawn Backus '21 added 10 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Quintel Clements '22 pulled down 10 boards, which tied for the game high with Nurse. Clements also chipped in three points and two assists.

  • Elmira was 16-of-71 (22.5%) from the field and 3-of-25 (12%) from 3-point range.
  • Sage went 24-for-53 (45.3%) from the floor and 2-for-13 (15.4%) from distance.
