Softball Swept By Ithaca in Midweek Doubleheader

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College softball traveled north up Route 13 for a doubleheader against former Empire 8 Conference rival Ithaca College on Wednesday. The Bombers took both halves of the twin bill with wins of 10-0 and 17-0 over the Soaring Eagles.

Ithaca 10, Elmira 0
The Bombers (2-0) began their impressive midweek performance with a one-hitter. Ithaca pitcher Beth Fleming surrendered a double to Alexis Dinga '22 in the third inning and worked around a trio of walks to pick up the win.

On the other hand, IC knocked three of their 11 hits out of the park, two of which came in an eight-run bottom of the fourth.

Ally Barr '21 started for the Soaring Eagles (0-2) in the pitcher's circle. She was responsible for all 10 runs in 4.0 innings of work. Barr struck out two on 89 pitches.

Ithaca 17, Elmira 0
The hosts from Ithaca continued to swing the bat well in the nightcap, pounding out 17 runs on 14 hits, including four more home runs. Riley Piromalli tossed a complete game, but had to work to preserve the shutout.

After stranding runners on the corners in the first, EC managed to load the bases in the top of the fifth. Barr was walked following a seven-pitch at-bat, before Piromalli plunked Katie Distefano '24 and walking Dinga with two outs. The inning came to an unceremonious end, however, when Piromalli struck out Kristen Aasheim '24 in her only plate appearance of the game.

Dinga wrapped up the late game 1-for-2 with a walk. Alex Brockhuizen '22 had Elmira's second hit, and Barr given a free pass both times she stepped to the plate. Jillian Cortez '23 struck out four in 3.0 innings as EC's starting pitcher.
