ELMIRA, N.Y. -- St. John Fisher College, the defending Empire 8 Conference champion, claimed a three-set win over Elmira College in women's volleyball on Wednesday night. The Cardinals (3-0, 2-0 E8) defeated the Soaring Eagles (1-1, 1-1 E8) by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-10.
In the first set, Fisher jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back. The Cards led by as many as 11 points in the opening set, before closing it out 25-17.
The second set was nail-biter that went right down to the wire. Elmira held an early three-point advantage, but the lead teetered from team to team as the set progressed. Fisher pieced together a 4-0 run, and then went on to win three of the next four points, to take a commanding 24-18 lead.
Facing a multitude of match points, Elmira rallied with five consecutive points that saw
Savannah Terry '21 log one of her match-high-tying two service aces. The 5-0 run brought the score to 24-23, but a kill from Rebecca Hay clinched the set for Fisher at 25-23.
Fisher's hot hitting in the third set was the difference, as the Cardinals ran away with it, 25-10. St. John Fisher did not commit a single hitting error in the set with 12 kills on 24 attempts.
Lauren Smith '21 led Elmira's offense with a team-high seven kills. She also added seven digs and two assists.
Amelia Martin '23 chipped in six kills, five digs, one block and one assist.
Senior
Kassi Hastings '21 handled setting duties tonight. She recorded 19 assists, four digs, and one service ace.
Defensively, rookie
Maddie Hampton '24 logged a match-high 12 digs.
