Houghton Takes Two In Baseball's Season-Opening Doubleheader

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Exactly one year after last taking the field, the Elmira College baseball team returned to action with a doubleheader against Houghton College. Played as non-conference matchups, the Highlanders (2-0) won both games against EC (0-2) by scores of 14-5 and 14-6.

Houghton 14, Elmira 5
The Soaring Eagles produced all five of their runs in the late innings. In the seventh, James Delaney '22 broke Houghton's shutout bid by walking safely to first, reaching third on an error, and scoring on a passed ball. In the eighth, the Highlander bullpen started to erode, as the hosts loaded the bases with two hit batters and a walk. Another free pass with Delaney at the plate forced in EC's second run, and Mason Ryan '22 cleared the bases with a three-run single in the next at-bat.

Houghton, however, outhit the Soaring Eagles 14-to-3 and scored runs in five of the first six innings.

Delaney did not have a hit in the opener, but was walked six times, scored twice, and earned one RBI. Ryan finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Jarod Signorelli '23 went 1-for-2 with two walks and one run scored.

Houghton 14, Elmira 6
In the seven-inning nightcap, Elmira batted as the home team, and once again used the late innings to spark some offense. The Soaring Eagles logged five runs in the sixth inning, batting around the order in the process.

Junior slugger Joe Morrone '22 began the frame with a solo shot. Angus Adams '22 walked and was driven in by first-year backstop Jacob Parker '24. With the bases loaded, Jared Money '22 plated another run with a sac fly. Another freshman, Myles Littlejohn '24, picked up his first collegiate RBI on a bases-loaded infield single. After cutting the deficit to 14-6, Morrone walked in his second plate appearance of the inning, but the Highlanders escaped further damage and left the bases loaded.

Like the first game, Houghton outhit Elmira, but by a much smaller margin (9-to-6). Six different batters had a hit in the second game, with Littlejohn, Parker, Colin McLaughlin '22, and Luke Frontale '22 each recording their first career hits.
