Cortez Highlights Softball's Losses vs. Alfred in E8 Doubleheader

ALFRED, N.Y. -- Standout sophomore Jillian Cortez '23 had an excellent start on the mound in Game 1 and homered in Game 2 of Saturday's Empire 8 Conference twin bill, but Alfred University swept the doubleheader from Elmira College, 1-0 and 11-5.

Alfred 1, Elmira 0
Cortez and Alfred (14-5, 5-3 E8) starter Megan Bennett found themselves in a classic pitchers' duel. For the Saxons, Bennett struck out nine and gave up three hits. Cortez allowed only one hit, struck out three, but surrendered an unearned in the first inning.

An eight-pitch at-bat against lead-off batter Ashley Lugo ended when Cortez plunked the third-year shortstop. Lugo was able to steal second, advance to third on a wild pitch, and eventually scored the game's only run on a passed ball. But EC's starting pitcher got an inning-ending double play in the fourth before retiring all nine batters in the five, sixth, and seventh in her second complete game of the season.

Elmira's (3-9, 2-4 E8) best chance at an equalizer came in the fifth. Cortez led off with a single, and pinch-runner Kristen Aasheim '24 moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mykenzie Malacusky '23. Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, Bennett froze Bella DeAmelia '24 to end a seven-pitch at-bat with a strikeout before getting a ground ball to end the frame.

Alfred 11, Elmira 5
Batting as the home team on Saturday, the Soaring Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Cortez picked up her first RBI with a grounder to score Madison Brown-Bloom '23 from third base. Then Ally Barr '21 plated Alexis Dinga '22 with a base hit to pull ahead by one.

The Saxons responded with crooked numbers in three of the next four innings. Alfred scored thrice in the top of the third, added a four-spot in the fifth, and drove in two more runs in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead.

Cortez wasn't finished with her highlight-reel day, however. Following back-to-back hits from Brown-Bloom and Dinga, Cortez cleared the outfield wall and the bases with a three-run blast, her second long ball of the year.

  • Five different Soaring Eagles finished the afternoon with multiple hits.
