ALFRED, N.Y. -- Alfred University remained unbeaten in 2021 and swept the season series from the Elmira College men's lacrosse team with a 21-2 victory over the Soaring Eagles on Saturday.
In their second meeting with the Saxons this season, the Soaring Eagles (1-4) performed better against the Saxons (5-0) on paper. EC took more shots, picked up more ground balls, and committed fewer turnovers, yet was held to five fewer goals than the 2021 season opener on March 11.
Alfred held Elmira off of the scoreboard until the third quarter and rolled out to a comfortable lead with the first 16 goals of the afternoon. The Soaring Eagles denied the Saxons of a shutout when
Sam Shaw '22 buried a feed from
Brennan Bitely '24 for a man-up goal at 1:47 in the third. The team's leading scorer,
Matt Daley '24, scored his team-best 15th goal of the season in the fourth quarter.
Senior goalkeeper
Jacob Mattice '21 played all 60 minutes and logged 16 saves. Mattice, a Canton, New York, native also tied for the game-high with seven ground balls. Daley, Shaw, and first-year midfielder
David Frederick '24 each picked up four ground balls, while Frederick caused a game-best three turnovers.
