ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College softball team played 12 solid innings on Thursday evening against Russell Sage College, but the Gators secured a pair of wins, 5-0 and 10-5, by capitalizing in the seventh inning of both games.
Russell Sage 5, Elmira 0
Ally Barr '21 and Sage's Taylor Dicranian squared off in a pitcher's duel through the first six innings of the early contest. While Dicranian faced the minimum and was one infield error shy of a perfect game, Barr finished with a game-high three strikeouts and relied on her defense to make plays behind her.
Barr made a great snag on a comebacker for the first out of the third and fielded her position well by calling off the infield for a pop-up in the fourth. The corner infielders,
Alex Brockhuizen '22 and
Paige Cring '21, ended the fourth with a heads-up play. Although an errant throw allowed Samantha Larsen to reach first safely, Cring gunned down Erika Markowski as she rounded second and tried to advance an extra base.
In the fifth,
Hannah Flagg '24 made a shoestring grab on a fly ball in shallow right and helped Barr strand a runner at third by catching a low line drive for out No. 3.
Despite the quality pitching and defensive support early on, the Gators sent all nine batters to the plate and rallied with a five-run seventh.
Russell Sage 10, Elmira 5
EC quickly shook off the result of the first game. In the bottom of the second, the Soaring Eagles lit up the scoreboard with four runs and chased game two starter Makayla Lindsey from the pitcher's circle.
Alexis Dinga '22,
Janie Kempf '21, and
Felicity Brockhuizen '22 all earned RBIs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single off Brockhuizen's bat that gave Elmira a 4-2 lead.
In the third,
Madison Brown-Bloom '23 doubled and scored on a Barr single to keep EC's advantage at two, 5-3.
Jillian Cortez '23 was given the ball in the top of the fifth and pitched very effectively, as she retired the side on just four pitches. The Gators got one run back in the sixth, but once again, the seventh proved to be disastrous. Sage pounded out five hits and took advantage of a pair of EC errors to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 10-5 victory.

- Dinga batted 2-for-3 in the late game, making her the only Soaring Eagle to finish Thursday's twin bill with multiple hits.
