Women’s Basketball Drops Empire 8 Matchup On Friday Against Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Elmira College Women's Basketball program ran into a hot-shooting Hartwick Hawks team as the Soaring Eagles dropped a 76-36 decision on Friday night in Empire 8 Conference action from Lambros Arena. Nevaeh Winston '25 paced the Purple & Gold with 10 points and eight rebounds in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Hartwick opened the scoring at the charity stripe as the Hawks would take a 2-0 lead and use a 15-0 run to gain momentum before the Soaring Eagles received a pair of made free-throws from Desiree Roy '25 at the 5:50 mark of the first quarter. Taylor Albrecht '22 followed with a jumper to trim the deficit to 15-4 at the 5:17 mark for EC. Hartwick extended the lead to 23-5 down the stretch until Winston finished a layup off a steal with nine seconds left to make it 23-7.

The Soaring Eagles opened the second quarter with a 3-0 run following a jumper from Roy and a 1-for-2 effort by Alyssa Waters '22 at the free-throw line to make it 23-10 Hartwick. With 3:39 left in the quarter, Winston hit a layup in the paint to close the gap to 33-12. The Hawks would head into the locker room with a 43-12 cushion against the Soaring Eagles.

Four early points in the third quarter from Winston helped to trim the Hartwick lead to 48-17 before Taylor Jung '25 followed with a 3-pointer to make it 48-20. With just over two minutes left in the quarter, Roy and Albrecht put together a 4-0 run that would cut the deficit to 53-24. EC closed the quarter with a 4-0 run thanks to a pair of made free throws from Albrecht along with a layup from Waters with 19 seconds left.

Winston delivered another scoop and score sequence for the Soaring Eagles at the 6:27 mark of the fourth quarter with a layup to make it 63-32. Anna Ward '25 would later finish a jumper for EC with 3:26 remaining before Victoria Rought '24 made a pair of shots at the charity stripe. Hartwick closed the scoring to secure the 76-36 victory on its home court.

The Soaring Eagles forced the Hawks into 21 turnovers on the night and would tally 17 points off Hartwick miscues. Roy finished with seven points and seven boards for the Soaring Eagles, while Waters added three assists and three points for Elmira.

The Soaring Eagles return to the court on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. tipoff scheduled against Sage for an Empire 8 Conference matchup. Elmira returns home to host Houghton on Friday, January 28 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
