Soaring Eagles Split on Final Day of SUNY Poly Tournament

ELMIRA, N.Y.  – The Elmira College men's volleyball team split the final day of the SUNY Poly Tournament on Saturday, defeating Baruch in straight sets before falling to Lasell in the nightcap, 1-3. Oscar Munoz Trinidad '24 paced the Soaring Eagles on the day, recording 27 kills for the afternoon while Neiram Galan-Canales '23 recorded 63 assists between the pair of games.

JUST THE BASICS (Match 1):

Score: Elmira: 3, Baruch: 0
Records: Elmira: (5-0, 0-0 UVC), Baruch (1-3, 0-0 CUNYAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Elmira dominated in the hitting percentage category, running a percentage of .373 against the Bearcats. In all, the Soaring Eagles recorded 40 kills while committing just 12 errors, compared to Baruch who recorded 20 kills with 13 errors.
 
After taking the first set 25-18, the Soaring Eagles faced its toughest set of the afternoon as it took 27 points for Elmira to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 27-25 second-set victory.
 
In the third, the Soaring Eagles ran away with a 25-19 victory to win their fifth match of the season, four of which have come in straight sets.
 
Along with Munoz Trinidad, Matt Amoddio '22 and Alberto Mauricio '25 pitched in 16 kills for a trio total of 29 for the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
After falling in a hard-fought first set 27-25, Lasell would increase its lead in the match to 2-0 behind a 25-16 victory in the second set. Trailing 2-0, the Soaring Eagles went to work in the third set, recording its highest hitting percentage for a set at .280% in route to a 25-22 third set victory.
 
From there, Lasell would regroup and go on to take the fourth set convincingly, 25-14.
 
Jordan Peiser '24 added 10 kills in the match for the Soaring Eagles while Munoz Trinidad added 14 of his own.

UP NEXT:
The Soaring Eagles will return to its home court on Tuesday when they welcome the Saints from D'Youville College. First serve is set for 6:00 PM inside Speidel Gymnasium.
