Late Goal Propels Women's Soccer Past Keuka On Senior Day

ELMIRA, N.Y. --  The Elmira College women's soccer team sent off its 2023 senior class with a victory as they defeated the Keuka College Wolves 1-0 at Campus Field on Saturday afternoon. The Soaring Eagles were outshot by the Wolves 21 to 12 but found the game-winner with just 12 minutes remaining in the game when freshman Ally Stilo '26 tucked the ball past the Keuka goalkeeper into the lower right corner of the net.

JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: Elmira 0, Keuka 0
LOCATION: Elmira, N.Y.
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (6-8-2, 1-5-3 E8), Keuka (2-7-5, 0-4-3 E8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
After honoring seniors Lauren Foster '23, Kelly Keegan '23. Kaitlyn Bickham '23, Luaren Shanahan '23, and Libby Cook '23, the Purple & Gold looked to take an early lead three minutes into play. Junior Sarah Wagner '24 sent a hard shot toward the top right corner of goal but it bounced off the post for a goal kick.

Sophomore Rachel Bortnick would sub on for EC and provide a spark with two shots on goal but was denied by the Wolves' keeper. Elmira was able to win a corner kick in the 42nd minute and Wagner found space for a shot but it went wide right.

After the break, Keuka was aggressive as they ripped off nine shots in the first 10 minutes of the half. Elmira goalkeeper Nevaeh Winston '25 stayed strong in net, denying all of the Wolves' attempts. Winston would end the match with a season-high 14 saves.

Late in the game with the score still knotted at 0-0, the Purple & Gold won a free kick from about 40 yards out from goal. Wagner would take the kick and send the ball in low towards the penalty area. Bortnick sprinted across the top of the 18-yard box and flicked the ball across to the right side where Stilo gathered it and poked it into the net for the game-winning goal.

UP NEXT:
The Purple & Gold culminate their season next Saturday, October 29 when they host St. John Fisher University. Kick-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
