Soaring Eagles Split Friday Doubleheader with Nazareth at Holding Point

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The Elmira College Softball team split its pair of Empire 8 Conference games on Friday afternoon against the Golden Flyers from Nazareth College. After taking game one which saw Amelia Martin '23 go 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, the Soaring Eagles dropped the back-end of the doubleheader 3-1.

Martin would go on to finish the day going 5-for-7, with each of her hits going to the left side and centerfield. Jillian Cortez would be the bright spot in game two, going 4.0 innings of relief where she allowed just one hit to keep the Soaring Eagles in the game. 

For the day, Madison Brown-Bloom '23 and Hannah Flagg '24 each posted a trio of hits.

KEY MOMENT:
Cortez opened the scoring in game one with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first inning which brought home Martin, who singled to open the frame. 

After Nazareth knotted the game up in the second on an RBI single, the Soaring Eagles batted around in the 5th inning to score a pair of runs on three hits. Flagg would score the first run of the inning after scoring on a passed ball, while Tiante Murray recorded an RBI on a walk with the bases loaded. 

Barr would go on to pitch a complete game, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out four. 

In game two, the Golden Flyers would hang a three-spot in the first inning against Elmira starting pitcher MaryAnn Sobel '25. EC would commit an error that resulted in an unearned run, along with three Nazareth hits. The Nazareth offense would go quiet for the remainder of the game while the Soaring Eagles made a push in the 6th inning after Brown-Bloom singled home Martin, who doubled earlier in the inning. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
To begin the doubleheader, the Soaring Eagles would open the scoring with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first inning from Cortez, which brought home Martin who singled with one out in the frame. 

After Nazareth knotted the game up in the second on an RBI single, the Soaring Eagles batted around in the 5th inning to score a pair of runs on three hits. Flagg would score the first run of the inning after scoring on a passed ball, while Tiante Murray recorded an RBI on a walk with the bases loaded. 

From the third to the sixth inning, Barr was able to retire 11 of 12 batters while holding the Golden Flyers to just three hits over her first six innings of work. In the seventh, the Golden Flyers would make a push, scoring a run against Barr to close the gap, 3-2. Despite a pair of Soaring Eagle errors, the Flyers would still come up short as EC picked up its second conference win of the season. 

In game two, the Soaring Eagles would be held to just two hits over the first five innings while hanging a three-spot in the first inning against Elmira starting pitcher MaryAnn Sobel '25.

UP NEXT:
Tomorrow's doubleheader against Keuka has been postponed due to projected inclement weather. The Soaring Eagles are scheduled to return to the field against Lycoming College on Tuesday, April 19.
