ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team dropped a home conference match against Houghton University 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. After getting down by two goals early, the Soaring Eagles showed fight over the final 20 minutes of the first half but couldn't cut the deficit. Early in the second half, the Purple & Gold created a few scoring opportunities but Houghton would later extend their lead by two more goals to seal the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Houghton got out to an early 1-0 lead after 12 minutes of play when Natalie Milne found the back of the net after breaking free for a one on one chance against Elmira goalkeeper
Nevaeh Winston '25. Four minutes later, the Highlanders pushed their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Samara Hallett. Houghton won a free kick and sent a ball in that forced Winston into a save, Hallett was able to clean up the rebound for her team's second goal.
The Soaring Eagles would look to respond as they won two corners shortly after falling behind. Sophomore
Lauralie Grainer '25 had two shots on goal in the remaining seven minutes of play but was not able to turn either into a score.
Shortly after half, senior
Libby Cook '23 had an opportunity to cut the Highlanders' lead but her shot went just wide to the left. In the 53rd minute, Morgan Applegate would put another goal away to make Houghton's lead three goals and in the 65th they sealed the game with a final goal by Aivery Shuck.

The Purple & Gold are back in action on Wednesday, September 28 when they travel to Hamburg, NY for a non-conference contest with Hilbert College. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
