Men's Soccer Earns Second Win of the Year at SUNY Delhi

Gavin Wise '22 scored his second game-winner of the season while Zachary Raffino '23 posted his second shut-out in a 1-0 victory

DELHI, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's soccer team picked up its second win of the season after earning a 1-0 road victory over SUNY Delhi on Wednesday afternoon. Gavin Wise '22 scored the game-deciding goal for the Purple & Gold in the 22nd minute of play off an assist from Lutho Mlunguza '23. Zachary Raffino '23 posted his second shut-out of the year and tied his career-high with 8 saves in the match.

JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: Elmira 1, SUNY Delhi 0
LOCATION: Elmira, NY
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (2-0-1, 0-0 E8), Delhi (2-1-0, 0-0 NAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
About midway through the first half of play, Kody Frontin '25 sent a long pass from behind the 50-yard line, outside to Mlunguza on the left side of the field. Mlunguza made a quick move past two Bronco defenders to find open space in the middle of the pitch. As he picked up his head, he saw Wise on a full sprint towards the Delhi penalty area and sent in a perfectly weighted pass Wise to run onto. Wise would take one touch on the ball as he crossed into the 18-yard box and slotted the ball past the keeper with his right foot to give Elmira a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

The goal would end up as the game-winner for the Soaring Eagles, as neither team was able to find the net for the remaining 68 minutes. The goal was Wise's second of the season and his second game-winner, as he also picked up a goal in EC's season opening 1-0 victory last Thursday at SUNY Morrisville.

Elmira would narrowly outshoot Delhi in the game, as they finished with 13 shots to the Bronco's 12 and held the advantage in corner kicks 3 to 2. Raffino picked up his second shut-out of the year, while Mlunguza tallied his second assist.

UP NEXT:
