Sharp Shooting Propels Soaring Eagles Past Bobcats on Tuesday Evening

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College men's basketball team got back in the win column on Tuesday evening, posting an 84-63 victory over the visiting Bobcats from Bryant & Stratton (Albany) inside Speidel Gymnasium. The Soaring Eagles, who shot 9-of-23 from beyond the arc, led by Riley Spencer '26 (5-for-8), were able to hold the Bobcats to just a 2-of-18 effort from deep, as Spencer finished with a game-high 29 points, which included 20 in the second half. 

Additionally, Tyler Cardello '26 chipped in 21 points and nine rebounds, while JJ Babcock '26 finished with ten points and seven boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Soaring Eagles would never trail in the contest, scoring a bucket 15 seconds into regulation on a layup from Cardello which would begin the 39:45 seconds that the Purple & Gold retained the lead. 
  • In the half, the Elmira lead would grow to as many as eight before a three-pointer from Spencer, assisted by Jack O'Grady '26 put Elmira ahead ten going into the break. 
  • For the first half, Cardello & Spencer would pave the way with nine points a piece, while Elmira controlled the points off turnovers battle, outscoring the Bobcats 9-3 in part to just four first-half turnovers for the Soaring Eagles. 
  • Out of the break, Elmira would increase its lead to 23 points just 6:15 seconds into the half following a three from Spencer, as the sophomore guard scored 12 of Elmira's first 22 points out of the break. 
  • From there, the Bobcats would look to make things interesting after the Soaring Eagles put them into the bonus early, but were unable to take the Purple & Gold lead down to any less than 17 points the remainder of the way.
  • For the contest, the Soaring Eagles would post a 51.6% effort from the floor (33-of-64), which included a 20-of-30 (66.7%) mark in the second half. The Bobcats would finish just 19-of-58 from the field (32.8%).
  • In his first contest for the Soaring Eagles this season, Aaron Lane '25 would record seven points (3-of-3 shooting) in just six minutes, while O'Grady finished with four assists and four rebounds for the Purple & Gold.
