Women's Basketball Falls to Alfred in Regular-Season Finale

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's basketball team rounded out its regular season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the hosts from Alfred University, 63-74. After outscoring the Saxons 19-15 in the first quarter, the Soaring Eagles were held to just five points in the second, compared to 25 for the home squad which proved to be the difference. 

Desiree Roy '25 paced Elmira with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Alleney Klunk '24 and Nevaeh Winston rounded out the Elmira scoring, posting 15 and 14 points, respectively, with Winston posting a double-double along with Roy.

After a solid first quarter which saw the Soaring Eagles shoot 61.5% from the floor, the tides would change in the second frame as the Saxons held Elmira to just a 13.3% clip on 2-of-15 shooting. The Saxons, who scored 25 points in the frame, shot just over 53% from the field in the quarter, allowing the home team to carry a 40-24 lead into the break. 

In the second half, the Soaring Eagles would come out and outscore Alfred 21-11 in the third quarter, closing the Alfred lead to six heading into the fourth quarter. Despite the run, the Purple & Gold were unable to overcome the second quarter deficit as the Saxons went on to win the contest 74-63.

For the contest, the Soaring Eagles were forced into 14 turnovers, resulting in a 24-3 advantage in the points off turnovers category for the Saxons. Additionally, the Saxons showed its depth, receiving 30 points from the bench in the contest.
