Soaring Eagles Pick up Third Consecutive Empire 8 Victory with Win Over Hartwick on Saturday Afternoon

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team would pick up its third straight Empire 8 Conference victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Hawks from Hartwick College, 93-74. It marks the third time in the Casey McGraw era that the Soaring Eagles have picked up three consecutive E8 wins. 

For the afternoon, the Soaring Eagles were paced offensively by Tyler Cardello '26 and Riley Spencer '26, who scored 22 and 23 points, respectively. Cardello also chipped in eight rebounds to go along with his point total.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Soaring Eagles would begin the game down four, but five of seven points from Marc Anthony Artuz '24 would knot the contest at 10-10 with 14:22 remaining in the frame. From there, the Soaring Eagles and the Hawks would trade buckets, with Elmira gaining its first true lead of the afternoon following a made jumper from Spencer with 9:22 remaining to put EC ahead 22-20. 
  • Following the basket from Spencer, the Soaring Eagles would not surrender the lead for the remainder of the contest, growing its first half lead to as many as 11 points before a quick run at the end of the frame for Hartwick had Elmira ahead by four going into halftime. 
  • For the half, Elmira would shoot 15-of-25 (60.0%) from the floor, which also included a 6-of-15 effort from beyond the arc, and a 6-of-6 effort from the free throw line. 
  • Elmira would begin the second half on a 20-2 run, which extended its lead to 22 points over the first five and a half minutes of play. The lead would grow to as many as 23 points, before Hartwick trimmed it down to eight points with just 8:59 remaining. 
  • Three pointers from Artuz & Dylan Jacob '24 would see EC take a lead of 17 with 2:12 remaining, which would ultimately be enough in Elmira's 93-74 victory. 
  • For the contest, Elmira would outscore Hartwick 26-21 in points off turnovers, and 12-8 in fastbreak points. 
  • Elmira would finish the contest shooting 29-of-53 from the field (54.7%), compared to a 26-of-61 (42.6%) effort for the Hawks.
