Soaring Eagles Battle-Test Cardinals in Saturday Matinee

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's volleyball team battled the visiting Cardinals from St. John Fisher University on Saturday afternoon at home, eventually dropping its matchup 3-0. Despite, the Soaring Eagles were able to battle the Cardinals in each of the first two sets (25-22, 25-20), before dropping the final frame 25-15. As a team, the Soaring Eagles would hold Fisher to its second lowest hitting percentage in Empire 8 play this season (.196%), while Morgan Richardson '25 paced EC on the offensive end with eight kills and a .300 hitting percentage. 

Defensively, Elmira was able to see double-figure digs (10) from Makenna Clark '25, while Madi Conti '28 finished with a solo block and three block assists. Asia Curkendall '25 would also record 16 set assists on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the opening set, the teams would share the lead six times, while changing leads just once. After the Soaring Eagles took a 3-0 advantage which eventually widened to 8-3, the Cardinals would answer back with seven straight, including five service aces from Isabella Mahar to take an 11-10 lead. With Fisher leading 23-21 in the late going, a kill from Elmira native Madalyn Bouton would eventually secure a first set victory for the visitors. 
  • In the second, the Soaring Eagles would continue to apply early set pressure, holding a 12-10 lead. Much like the first, the Cardinals would score seven of the next nine points, taking a three-point advantage which was trimmed to as little as one on a pair of occasions. Leading 17-16, Fisher would score eight of the next 12 points, taking the set 25-20 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Cardinals would take the third set 25-15, while producing its best hitting percentage in a set for the contest. Despite its largest set victory, Elmira would show nine ties and four lead changes in the frame, all coming in the first 22 points of the frame as an 11-11 tie would be the last. 
  • As a team, Elmira's four blocks would be its fourth best in a contest this season.

The Soaring Eagles will hit the road next Friday when traveling to Albany, New York to square off against the Gators from Russell Sage College in another Empire 8 matchup. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
