HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • From there, Sobel would toss three scoreless innings to begin her afternoon, where she allowed just three hits before the Elmira offense added eight runs in the bottom half of the third. In the frame, the Purple & Gold would work seven walks, while receiving hits from Brown-Bloom & Ramstine, both of which brought home runs.
  • After a scoreless top of the fourth for Sobel, Elmira would add another in the bottom half as Olivia Roccabruna '27 singled home Hannah Flagg '24, who reached base safely on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
  • The Mustangs would answer with four of its own in the top of the fifth, using three walks, a pair of hits, and an error to its advantage to trim its deficit to just six runs. Sobel's final line would be 5.0 innings, where she allowed four runs (one earned) while walking three and striking out four.
  • Elmira would finish the game in the bottom of the inning after Jean brought home Kaitlyn Belmont '24 on a walk, followed by a throwing error at the plate as the Mustangs tried to extend the contest.
  • In game two, the Soaring Eagles would get on the board early after a scoreless first inning from EC starting pitcher Wheat as Katie Distefano '24 brought home Asia Curkendall '25 on an RBI single.
  • In the second, the Purple & Gold would score another three runs as a wild pitch and throwing error from the Mustangs allowed Elmira to extend its lead to 4-0.
  • With Wheat cruising on the mound, Elmira would see back-to-back extra base hits to begin the third from Distefano and Brown-Bloom, who tripled and homered (inside-the-park), respectively, to put the Soaring Eagles ahead 6-0.
  • After not allowing a hit through three innings, Wheat would allow a leadoff single in the fourth before retiring the next three batters she faced to keep the shutout intact.
  • Kendall McAnelly '27 would come on in relief of Wheat to begin the fifth, after the starter went 4.0 innings, allowing no runs on just one hit, while walking one and striking out one.
  • In the top of the fifth, McAnelly would work a clean inning while earning a strikeout.
  • The game would come to a close in the bottom half of the fifth after Jean doubled home Bella DeAmelia '24 and Sobel, who reached on a fielder's choice and a walk earlier in the inning.
