HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – Behind the strength of four home runs at the plate and 11 runs scoring in the first inning, the Elmira College baseball program recorded a 15-7 victory to open its Empire 8 series against Houghton University on Saturday at the Holding Point.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Houghton would load the bases in the top of the first inning against Elmira starting pitcher Jack Finnerty '23 following a pair of walks and catcher's interference. Finnerty and the Soaring Eagles responded with a strikeout followed by an inning-ending double play.
- Erik Charnetski '24 opened the scoring with a bases-clearing triple for the Purple & Gold in the bottom of the first inning, while Xander Canfield '26 followed with a run-scoring single to make it 4-0.
- Connor Stone '26 delivered a three-run home run later in the frame to increase the Elmira lead to 7-0 before Gabe Fellows '25 added a run-scoring single to make it 8-0. Brett Warden '25 made it 10-0 with a two-run triple before Charnetski capped the scoring with his fourth RBI of the frame.
- The Highlanders notched a pair of runs against Finnerty in the top of the second inning to trim the deficit to 11-2 and would add three more runs in the top of the third inning to make it 11-5.
- Both teams would add a solo home run in the fourth inning as Kanta Ueno left the yard for Houghton to make it 11-6 before Stone delivered his second home run of the day to make it 12-6 in favor of the Soaring Eagles.
- Nick Lees '25 added a pinch-hit home run for Elmira in the bottom of the seventh inning to stretch the advantage to 14-6. The fourth home run of the contest for EC would come from Fellows in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 15-6.
- Houghton closed the scoring with a single run in the top of the ninth inning against Elmira reliever Erik Berkan '27. Berkan was solid out of the bullpen for the Soaring Eagles as he notched his first collegiate save after tossing four innings to go along with two strikeouts.
- Finnerty improved to 4-1 on the season after tossing five innings while scattering six runs off four hits to go along with four strikeouts for Elmira. Aidan Talcott suffered the loss for Houghton after exiting the game in the first inning.
