Monday Matinee Split for Soaring Eagles in E8 Twin Bill against Houghton

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – Erik Charnetski '24 delivered a single in the fifth inning of game one to help the Elmira College baseball team to an Empire 8 Conference split against Houghton University on Monday at the Holding Point Recreation Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Soaring Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning of game one as Kaden Bolt '26 recorded a double with one out to secure EC's first hit. Gabe Fellows '25 would be hit by a pitch while Brett Warden '25 worked a walk to put three runners on base before Houghton recorded back-to-back outs to get out of the jam.
  • Elmira would produce the lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning as Fellows worked a walk with one out before advancing to second with a stolen base. Erik Charnetski '24 delivered a single through the right side to allow Fellows to score and make it 1-0.
  • Houghton would be retired in order in the top of the seventh inning as the Soaring Eagles secured the 1-0 victory and series win against the Highlanders. David Kruis '23 started the contest for EC and would take the no-decision after exiting the game with one out in the fourth inning.
  • Kyle Tubbs '22 closed the contest out of the bullpen and scattered one hit over 3.2 innings of work while fanning four batters. Kruis and Tubbs each allowed one hit while neither issued a walk.
  • Xander Canfield '26 gave Elmira a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game two with a double that allowed Matteo Salvati '25 to score. EC followed with two runs in the bottom of the third inning as Warden notched a single to make it 2-0 before Salvati added a sacrifice fly that plated Warden to make it 3-0.
  • Houghton rallied with three runs in the fifth inning as a ground-rule double to left field allowed a pair of runs to score for the Highlanders to knot the game 3-3. Elmira would retake the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Warden was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Trailing 4-3 entering the top of the eighth inning, Houghton knotted the score 4-4 with a hit-by-pitch and three runners on base. The Highlanders would score the eventual game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning with a single that made it 5-4.
 
 
 
UP NEXT:
The Soaring Eagles head to Albany this weekend for a pivotal Empire 8 series against Russell Sage College with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, followed by a single game on Sunday.
