Soaring Eagles Drop E8 Series Opener against Cardinals on Saturday

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Elmira College baseball program opened its three-game Empire 8 Conference series against the St. John Fisher University Cardinals on Saturday as the Cardinals recorded a 12-1 victory in seven innings from Dugan Yard.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Soaring Eagles placed a pair of runners on base in the top of the first inning as Brett Warden '25 worked a walk before Matteo Salvati '25 delivered a single to right field. The Cardinals would get out of the inning as Erik Charnetski '24 grounded into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.
  • St. John Fisher opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of sacrifice flies to go along with a bases-loaded walk and run-scoring double into center field.
  • Trailing 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Soaring Eagles would get onto the scoreboard as Charnetski delivered a double into left field. The hit allowed Salvati to come around and score to trim the deficit to 4-1.
  • The Cardinals answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to stretch the lead to 7-1. St. John Fisher rallied for five runs against the Elmira bullpen in the bottom of the sixth inning to stretch its advantage to 12-1.
  • Elmira would get the leadoff runner on base in the top of the seventh inning as Nathan Ofalt '26 singled into right field before the Cardinals retired the next three batters to secure the 12-1 run-rule victory in seven innings.
  • Salvati and Charnetski both recorded a double in the contest for Elmira, while Nick Lees '25 also notched a hit for the Soaring Eagles.
  • Jack Finnerty '23 suffered his first loss of the season on the mound for the Soaring Eagles after allowing seven runs off five hits through four innings of work. Out of the bullpen for the Purple & Gold, Erik Berkan '27 tossed one inning while allowing one run.
  • In the sixth inning, Kevin McGovern '26 allowed four runs off three hits and recorded one out before Jack Snowden '27 entered the contest and retired both batters he faced.
 
UP NEXT:
