Griffins Spoil Home Opener for Soaring Eagles on Saturday

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College field hockey program hosted its first match on the newly renovated turf at Campus Field on Saturday afternoon. The Soaring Eagles dropped a 10-0 decision against the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Griffins would open the scoring with two seconds remaining in the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead against the Soaring Eagles. Gwynedd Mercy would add three more goals to its total in the second quarter as each would come in a span of six minutes.
  • Gwynedd Mercy added to its 4-0 halftime advantage by tallying three goals in the third quarter and three more in the fourth quarter of the contest.
  • Elmira would get a pair of defensive saves in the contest from Peyton DeMaio '28 along with one more from Jessica Yesensky '26. Madison Fleming '27 notched both of Elmira's shots in the contest, including a shot that would be denied by the Griffins goalkeeper late in the fourth quarter.
  • Reese Bowen '27 finished the contest with 16 saves in the cage for the Soaring Eagles, while the Griffins held a 15-5 advantage in penalty corners.
 

UP NEXT: The Soaring Eagles travel to Wilkes University for a non-conference matchup on Sunday, September 15 beginning at noon.
