Soaring Eagles Drop Friday Night E8 Road Contest Against Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's basketball program traveled to Alfred University for its first Empire 8 Conference road matchup this season as the Soaring Eagles dropped a 67-48 decision against the Saxons.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Elmira knotted the score early in the first quarter as Nevaeh Winston '25 finished a layup following an offensive rebound with 6:10 remaining. Alfred would stretch its lead to eight points with just over four minutes left in the quarter.
  • A late rally to end the opening quarter trimmed the deficit for Elmira to 14-10 following a layup from Emma Ryan '28 with 38 seconds remaining.
  • Mallory Welty '26 opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer to trim the Alfred lead to 14-13 before the Saxons connected on a pair of free throws to go up 16-13. The Soaring Eagles cut the deficit to one point on multiple possessions before a 3-pointer from D'Asia Jones '25 gave Elmira a 24-22 lead with 1:15 remaining.
  • Both teams would go 1-for-2 at the free throw line in the final seconds of the quarter as Taylor Jung '25 hit a free throw to knot the score 25-25 right before halftime.
  • Alfred used a huge third quarter to pull away from the Soaring Eagles as the Saxons outscored the Purple & Gold 21-8 to take a 46-33 advantage into the fourth quarter of action.
  • Elmira looked to make a comeback in the final frame as the Soaring Eagles tallied 15 points, with Erin Bracken '28 connecting on a late 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds left to play, but the Saxons would secure the 67-48 victory.
