UTICA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's ice hockey team traveled to Utica to close their second UCHC series of the season. The Pioneers struck an early lead against the Soaring Eagles, but late goals from
Sarah Waszkielewicz and
Amber Meluzio propelled Elmira to a 2-1 victory.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Utica Pioneers were aggressive from the first puck drop, recording two shots on goal within the first two minutes of play. The Soaring Eagles retaliated quickly with a shot on goal of their own and were seen outshooting the Pioneers 12 to six. However, Utica recorded five blocked shots compared to Elmira's two. The Pioneers struck first at 14:34 in the first period with an unassisted goal from Elliana Lasher. Elmira was seen trailing 1-0 at the end of the first period.
With their work cut out for them, the Soaring Eagles opened the second period with four consecutive shots that were wide of the pipe. For the second consecutive period, Elmira was seen outshooting the Pioneers 12 to five. Ultimately, the Soaring Eagles could not cut into the Pioneers lead.
With their final chance at netting the equalizer, the Soaring Eagles forced a high-pressure offensive style. At 6:59,
Mandy McCarrick found the stick of Waszkielewicz for the equalizer. With both teams even, the Pioneers looked to recapture the lead by outshooting Elmira 14 to 10. To the Soaring Eagles advantage,
Savannah Barber and
Alayna Toole worked together to find the stick of
Amber Meluzio at 14:24 for the 2-1 advantage. In the final minutes of play, Utica utilized the empty net and recorded three shots on goal.
Sara Sevcikova stood tall between the pipes recording 24 saves to hold Utica to one goal and lead the Soaring Eagles to a 2-1 victory.
