Field Hockey Comes Up Short in Defensive Battle against Griffins, 2-0

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Two goals in the third quarter would be enough to push Gwynedd Mercy past the Elmira College field hockey program on Saturday, 2-0, in a non-conference matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Elmira goalkeeper Angelina Caban '26 would be tested just over two minutes into the first quarter as she denied a scoring opportunity by the Griffins.
  • Caitlin Ehlenfield '27 recorded a pair of shots that would miss the cage in the opening quarter as the Soaring Eagles looked to take the lead on the scoreboard.
  • Ehlenfield had three shots stopped by the Griffins in the second quarter, while Talia Nash '28 stopped her own chance by Gwynedd Mercy.
  • Defensively, the Soaring Eagles blocked three shots in the second quarter by the Griffins.
  • The Soaring Eagles blocked two early scoring chances in the third quarter before the Griffins scored their first goal at the 39:45 mark off a shot by Lillie Uttenreither. Gwynedd Mercy doubled its lead at the 43:16 mark with a shot from Allyssa Seifert. 
  • Caban made a pair of saves early in the fourth quarter to preserve a 2-0 lead before Elmira's offense looked to rally. Ehlenfield, Madison Fleming '27, and Peyton DeMaio '28 each had shots stopped by the Griffins.
  • Elmira finished the contest with a 7-6 lead in shots on goal, while also successfully stopping 12 of 13 penalty corners by the Griffins. Caban finished with four saves on six shots faced in goal for the Soaring Eagles.
