Elmira Survives in Shootout Against Golden Flyers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Elmira College men's hockey team traveled to Nazareth to open their UCHC weekend series against the Golden Flyers. A pair of late goals in the third quarter sent EC into overtime and came out on top after a 2-0 shootout.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Golden Flyers were an offensive powerhouse to open the contest. EC worked tirelessly on defense recording four blocked shots and seeing Brody Hanes with seven saves. Elmira was able to hold Nazareth scoreless in the first period and take the 1-0 advantage after Nicholas Bennett and Makai Tarjamo found the stick of Owen Halloran. Elmira closed the first period with a 1-0 lead. An action packed second period opened with Nazareth netting the equalizer less than four minutes into play. Both teams traded shots back-and-forth before Brody Finnegan found Tyler Schwindt in a power-play opportunity for EC to recapture the lead (2-1). 15 minutes into the period, the Golden Flyers managed to equalize the playing field once again (2-2). A pesky Nazareth offense tacked on another goal to enter the second intermissions with a 3-2 advantage.

Back on the ice, EC's goaltender continued to put in work while looking to create chances on offense. Less than seven minutes into the period, Cam Lowe and Finnegan worked together to get Brock MacDonald the puck and score the equalizer (3-3). The Golden Flyers did not settle and responded with an even strength goal of their own to once again steal the lead. Looking to head into overtime, Elmira took advantage of a slashing penalty on the Golden Flyers with a power-play goal from Lucas Stevenson seeing Justin Pare and Lowe pick up assists and conclude regulation.
In overtime, the Soaring Eagles outshot Nazareth nine to three. The Golden Flyer's goaltender was a force to be reckoned with and recorded four saves while Nazareth blocked two shots, sending the contest into a shootout. Elmira opened the shootout with Stevenson weaving the puck past Nazareth's goaltender for the 1-0 advantage. Both sides missed the next three shots until Jake Terra secured the 2-0 shootout victory for Elmira.
