Elmira Battles SUNY Poly in Senior Day Match

Elmira, N.Y. – The Elmira women's volleyball team returned to conference action this afternoon, hosting SUNY Poly for senior day. The Soaring Eagles battled the Wildcats through the opening two sets, but SUNY Poly ultimately claimed the match in straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-11).
 
LEADERS
Morgan Sica paced the Soaring Eagles offensively with six kills, while Averleigh McFarlan followed closely with five kills and added five digs. Ellora Bynoe contributed three kills, four digs and one block. Olivia Roccabruna recorded five assists and two service aces on the day.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Elmira came out with strong energy in the opening set, jumping ahead 2-0 following a Wildcat error and service ace from Gabby Lewis. Bynoe added a kill to push EC ahead 3-2, while another error from SUNY Poly gave them a 4-2 advantage. After back-and-forth action, the Wildcats responded and eventually built an 18-12 lead. Sica and McFarlan would then each record kills to cut into the deficit before Poly went on a run. Elmira continued its late-set push, stringing together five straight points to bring the score from 23-14 to 23-19. McFarlan delivered two kills during the run while the Wildcats committed three errors. SUNY Poly answered with the final two points to take the first set 25-19.
 
The second set featured several lead changes early on, both teams delivering strong rallies. Elmira opened with a 3-1 advantage before the Wildcats evened the score. Bynoe and Sica each recorded kills as the Soaring Eagles continued to battle, and EC took a short lead following kills from Bynoe and Roccabruna (12-10). Poly regained momentum midway through the set and pulled ahead 17-14. Elmira continued to pressure the Wildcats with Sica and McFarlan contributing solid kills and Roccabruna adding a service ace to bring them within three at 21-18. The Wildcats closed out set two after putting up the remaining points, 25-19.
 
SUNY Poly took control early in the third set, building a 6-0 advantage. Elmira answered with two points off Wildcat errorS, followed by a Zoie Karcz service ace to make it 9-3. McFarlan and Madalyn Devonshire added kills later in the set, while Roccabruna recorded another ace. Poly maintained their lead and extended the margin throughout the remainder of the set to close out the match with a 25-11 third-set win, completing the sweep.
 
UP NEXT
Elmira looks to bounce back as they are set to host Keuka on Tuesday, October 6th. Game time is slotted for 6 PM in Speidel Gymnasium.
