Men's Hockey Narrowly Falls Short Against No. 2 Hobart

Geneva, N.Y. - The Elmira College men's hockey team traveled to Geneva on Friday night for a non-conference matchup against No. 2 nationally ranked Hobart College. The Soaring Eagles battled throughout the contest but ultimately came up short, falling 2-0 to the Statesmen.

LEADERS
Kirill Madiev led the way for the Soaring Eagles with 37 saves, while Lucas Stevenson recorded a team-high four shots on goal. Cam Lowe contributed four blocked shots.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Soaring Eagles faced early pressure from the Statesmen, with Madiev making a pair of saves in the opening three minutes. Hobart broke through at the 3:12 mark, as Tamas Toth found the back of the net to give the Statesmen a 1-0 lead. Elmira looked to respond, with Austin Jerzak and Birch Gorman testing the Hobart netminder. EC successfully killed off two penalties in the opening frame but entered the first intermission trailing 1-0, with Hobart holding a 17-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Elmira earned an early power-play opportunity in the second period but was unable to capitalize. Five minutes into the frame, the Soaring Eagles appeared to have found the equalizer after a Brock MacDonald shot resulted in a scramble in front of the net, with the puck eventually crossing the goal line. However, the officials ruled that the whistle had blown before the puck entered the net, waving off the goal. Madiev continued to stand tall between the pipes, making 12 saves in the period to keep the deficit at one heading into the second intermission.

The Soaring Eagles continued to search for an equalizer in the third period, earning two power-play opportunities but failing to convert. Hobart doubled its advantage at the 16:40 mark, as Conor Lally found the back of the net to make it 2-0. Elmira was unable to break through in the closing minutes, falling to the Statesmen in its season opener.
