PINE VALLEY, N.Y. - The Elmira College women's hockey team hosted the Cougars of Chatham University in a rematch of yesterday's contest, where the Soaring Eagles won, 6-0. The Soaring Eagles came out victorious again as they celebrated Senior Day with a 4-3 win.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Elmira started the game on the front foot, tallying the first five shots on net before Chatham received a power-play opportunity. The Soaring Eagles carried over their strong penalty kill from yesterday, limiting shots and even putting one on net of their own as they killed it off. They broke through shortly after, as Abby Eselunas's shot beat the Chatham netminder to give EC a 1–0 lead. Elmira continued to dominate the chances throughout the period, but Chatham found an equalizer in the final minute on a rush opportunity. The Soaring Eagles went into the locker room tied at one despite outshooting their opponents, 21–7.
Just 30 seconds into the second period, Piper Andrews picked up a loose puck at center ice and raced in to score on a nice wrist shot. The Cougars responded well, tying the game at two just 26 seconds later off the stick of their leading scorer, Klara Miuller, for her second of the game. Chatham found a spark from that goal and began to generate more chances before killing off an Elmira power play. They grabbed their first lead with six minutes left in the period, as Miuller finished a two-on-one to complete her hat trick. Another Elmira power play helped tilt the ice back toward the Soaring Eagles, and Anna Lugge's even-strength snipe leveled the game at three. Less than a minute later, MK Boyle tipped in a pass from Iliana Smith to put EC back in front heading into the second intermission.
A Chatham penalty early in the third gave Elmira an opportunity to extend its lead, but the Soaring Eagles couldn't find the insurance marker despite generating five shots on the power play. The Cougars pushed for an equalizer and created a few dangerous chances, but Sara Sevcikova stood tall when she needed to. Over the final 10 minutes, Elmira controlled possession in the Chatham zone for the most part, limiting opportunities and never allowing the Cougars a chance to pull their goaltender as they secured the 4–3 win.
