Women’s Basketball Falls in Back-and-Forth Contest at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Elmira College women's basketball team traveled to Oneonta Saturday afternoon for a UCHC showdown with the Hawks of Hartwick College. The Soaring Eagles battled hard but ultimately fell, 77-71.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Hawks opened the afternoon scoring with a pair of driving layups before Emma Ryan answered with two of her own. Some hot three-point shooting by Lauren Miller and Haley Mosch put the Soaring Eagles up early, and strong finishes inside by Sophia Ward and Ryan gave the Soaring Eagles a 17–11 edge after the first quarter. Hartwick hit a triple to start the second quarter, and Lauren Miller continued her hot shooting, answering with a three of her own before knocking down a couple of shots inside. A 10–4 run by the Hawks cut their deficit to one, but Emma Ryan's hook shot with the clock trickling down sent the Soaring Eagles into the locker room with a 32–29 lead.

Hartwick scored four quick points to open the third, and Amarionah Dixon and Ryan responded with driving finishes as the two sides began to trade leads. It was a largely back-and-forth period until a 7–0 run by the Hawks put them up by five, but free throws from Mosch and a three from Ryan leveled the game at 51 heading into the final frame. Hartwick started the fourth on a 7–2 run to pull ahead, but a pair of jumpers from Sophia Ward and Ryan made it a one-point game with six minutes left. Another 7–0 run by the Hawks gave them an eight-point lead, but Mosch brought it back within two possessions with a shot from downtown. The Soaring Eagles continued to try to chip away, but strong shooting from the Hawks saw the teams trade baskets down the stretch. A three-pointer from Miller cut it to four with twenty seconds left, but clutch free-throw shooting from Hartwick secured the 77–71 win.

Emma Ryan set a new career-high in points with 25 while also adding 9 rebounds and shooting an efficient 12 for 17 from the field. Lauren Miller scored 18 points, hitting four triples. Haley Mosch and Amarionah Dixon each added 11 points.
