Soaring Eagles Fall to Eastern University

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Elmira College baseball team traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC for a Wednesday matchup against the Eagles of Eastern University as part of the Ripken Experience. The Soaring Eagles battled but fell against Eastern University in a non-conference matchup.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY:
Eastern put the pressure on early loading the bases with one out in the first inning. A fielder's choice and a huge strikeout from pitcher Ryan Wiser got the Soaring Eagles out of the early jam. Kaden Bolt got the offensive half going for EC by getting hit by a pitch and stealing second. Two batters later, Jordan Barthel doubled to left center, bringing Bolt into score the first run of the game. Eastern responded, scoring eleven runs in the second inning to pull ahead 11-1. The EC half of the second started with back-to-back singles by Sean Deaner and Bobby Cavalier. The Soaring Eagles were unable to push any runs across in the inning despite the first two runners getting on. Eastern had two more runners on early in the third inning, but a double-play groundball helped Elmira escape the jam. Eastern added six more runs in the top of the fourth to add to their advantage.

Brennan Goin struck out two hitters in a row to close out the fifth. The Soaring Eagles had a scoring chance in the fifth when Ben Intili walked and Barthel singled, but both runners were left stranded. In the sixth Brandon Policar and Jaydn Wagner singled but Elmira was unable to push across any runs in the inning. Jaxon Bernard came in and pitched a scoreless seventh for the Soaring Eagles. Eastern closed out the seventh inning, Elmira falling in this game 17-1.

LEADERS
Offensively, Barthel led the way, going 2-3 with a double and picking up an RBI. Policar and Deaner had singles in their only at-bats. Bolt scored the only run for EC and stole a base. Intili pitched a clean inning in relief.

The Soaring Eagles continue the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC with a doubleheader against the Pilgrams of New England College on Thursday March 4th. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
