EC Splits Conference Regular Season Finale at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Elmira College Soaring Eagles softball traveled to face Hartwick in their final Empire 8 doubleheader of the regular season. EC took game one in dominating fashion, 12-1 while falling short 7-4 in game two.

GAME ONE: ELMIRA SOARS PAST HAWKS, 12-1
Sophia Polzella kicked things off with a leadoff solo blast on a 2-1 count for the early 1-0 advantage for Elmira. Back-to-back singles from Kendall Curreri and Hannah Colwill put runners aboard before Teona Cruz sent a three-run shot over the fence for a 4-0 lead for the Soaring Eagles. A three-up, three-down inning sent EC back to the plate in the top of the second. Polzella drew a one-out walk and stole second and third to sit in scoring position, seeing Curreri with the RBI double to left field to elevate EC to 5-0. In the bottom of the second, Hartwick was able to add one (5-1). The Soaring Eagles immediately responded with a pair of runs of their own to move to a 7-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Cruz blasted her second home run of the game followed by a sacrifice fly from Kristen Cole to bring Victoria Bonitz home for the 9-1 advantage. Elmira College secured the run rule in the top of the fifth, sparked by a Curreri walk. A two-out rally saw Colwill with a double to center, placing runners in scoring position. Cruz ripped a two-RBI double to center followed by Bonitz with an RBI single to secure the 12-1 victory in game one.

LEADERS
Offensively, Cruz led the way going 3-4 at the plate with two homeruns, five RBIs, and two runs. Curreri was perfect at the plate, going 2-2 with one RBI and two runs while Colwill was 2-3 at the plate with one run.
Emily Huntley picked up the win in the circle after tossing a complete game, only allowing four hits and recording one strikeout.

GAME TWO: SOARING EAGLES FALL SHORT TO HARTWICK, 7-4
Polzella kicked game two off the same way as game one, blasting a solo shot over the fence on the first pitch of her at bat (1-0). Colwill followed with a double down the left field line with Cruz bringing her home on an RBI single to left center for the early 2-0 advantage. The Hawks looked to make their mark, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with two hits in the bottom of the first. Both teams were evenly matched until the Hawks broke away in the bottom of the third. Hartwick was able to take the lead on four hits in the third (5-2).

The bottom of the fourth saw Hartwick add another run to their lead with two hits, 6-2. The Soaring Eagles retaliated in the top of the fifth, sparked by a leadoff solo shot form Riley Storrs (6-3). Polzella recorded a double to center followed by a Colwill single, seeing Cruz bring the run in on a groundout (6-4). The Hawks secured an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, seeing Elmira fall just short 7-4.
