Elmira, N.Y. – The Elmira women's soccer team hosted their third game of the season, welcoming the Mansfield Mountaineers to Campus Field. In a hard-fought match against a division II opponent, the Soaring Eagles came up just short suffering a loss, 3-2.
Leaders – Brooke Wilcox scored both goals for EC tonight,
Isabella Reuter assisting the first and
Amelia Sacratini with the second. Protecting the net for the Soaring Eagles,
Sarah Cantrell recorded four saves.
Play-by-play – The Soaring Eagles held their own in the beginning 25 minutes, both teams creating opportunities and taking shots when they could. Mansfield struck first, scoring two consecutive goals just one minute apart to take a 2-0 lead.
Kylie Drake connected with
Isabella Reuter, who sent the ball across to
Brooke Wilcox for the finish. Wilcox's goal was her second of the season, coming off an assist from Reuter bringing the Soaring Eagles within one. Mansfield carried a 2-1 advantage into halftime.
The Mountaineers came out in the second half, adding their third goal of the game in the 56
th minute. Wilcox stayed aggressive, finding the back of the net again in the 62
nd minute off an assist from Sacratini to once again cut Mansfield's lead to one (3-2). EC continued to capitalize on every opportunity, recording 18 shots throughout the match. When the clock hit 0:00, the Soaring Eagles fell just short in a tough battle with Mansfield walking away with a 3-2 win.
Up next – Elmira heads to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. this Saturday for an early-evening match-up against the King's College Monarchs at 4 pm.
