Albany, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season Wednesday afternoon, opening Empire 8 play with a 2-0 shutout win over the Russell Sage Gators.
LEADERS
Tierney Krawczyk and
Amy Ferrier scored one goal apiece, while
Scarlett Cobos recorded nine saves to earn the shutout in goal.
Dani Cruz led Elmira with four shots, including two on goal, while
Bella Thomas and
Isabella Reuter each recorded two shots.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Russell Sage generated several chances early in the contest, but EC's goalkeeper Cobos held the Gators at bay making three saves in the opening 13 minutes. Elmira began to settle in offensively as the half progressed, with
Amelia Sacratini putting a shot on target at 18:29 that was turned aside. The Soaring Eagles continued to build opportunities late in the half, as Thomas recorded a pair of shots with one on goal in the 29'. EC continued to apply pressure with Cruz and Reuter each testing the goalkeeper with shots on frame. Cobos finished the opening 45 minutes with four saves as the teams remained scoreless at halftime.
The Soaring Eagles came out quickly in the second half, earning a corner kick just 1:43 into the period before Krawczyk found the back of the net at 46:55 to give Elmira a 1-0 lead. Elmira continued to generate opportunities, with Cruz and Reuter each recording a shot as they continued to maintain pressure. EC added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Ferrier scored at 76:57 to extend the advantage to 2-0. The Soaring Eagles held strong defensively over the final minutes, with Cobos and the EC defense shutting out the Gators for the 2-0 victory.

The Soaring Eagles return to action on Saturday, September 19 when they travel to Keuka for another E8 matchup. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 PM.
